A modern fuse board (or consumer unit) uses M.C.B.'s (miniature circuit breakers) to protect the individual circuits. M.C.B.'s are like switches that turn off when a circuit becomes overloaded or faulty. M.C.B.'s are reset by simply switching back on.
Modern fuse boards incorporate one or more R.C.D.'s (residual current devices) which offer additional protection against electrocution for vulnerable circuits eg. Showers, sockets for tools, lawnmowers, etc.
