If your fuse board looks like this...

...then it definitely needs replacing.

The type of fuses used in this old board are of the rewirable type.
Rewirable fuses do not offer protection against electrocution
due to accidental contact with live parts

Rewirable fuses are often mistakenly repaired using ordinary wire
or the wrong size of fuse wire - this could result in a fire

When a rewirable fuse "blows" it will have to be repaired
(assuming there is fuse wire to hand) which is a fiddly process

A modern fuse board (or consumer unit) uses M.C.B.'s (miniature circuit breakers) to protect the individual circuits. M.C.B.'s are like switches that turn off when a circuit becomes overloaded or faulty. M.C.B.'s are reset by simply switching back on.

Modern fuse boards incorporate one or more R.C.D.'s (residual current devices) which offer additional protection against electrocution for vulnerable circuits eg. Showers, sockets for tools, lawnmowers,  etc.
